2D of/or 3D?
Hoe breed is het spectrum in het werk dat je doet als ontwerper? Art Director Joep Pohlen: ‘Dat ligt aan je achtergrond. Design blijft design ook al wordt het driedimensionaal. Wat verandert is de materiaalkeuze, de expertise en je voorstellingsvermogen hoe iets er ruimtelijk uit gaat zien. Een boek is ook een ruimtelijke vorm maar een beursstand, tentoonstelling of meubel is toch heel wat anders. Voor mij begon het al vroeg toen ik als vakantiewerk bij mijn oom in de meubelfabriek ging werken en ik daarna een timmeropleiding volgde. Vervolgens had ik een baan waar ik houtverwerkende bedrijven adviseerde welk gereedschap te gebruiken voor de productie van onder andere meubelen, deuren en kozijnen. Tot ik besloot weer te gaan studeren voor grafisch ontwerper aan de Kunstacademie in Maastricht. Tijdens mijn studie ontwierp en maakte ik ook meubelen als bijverdienste om de studie te betalen. Vanuit die expertise ben ik ook driedimensionale projecten blijven ontwerpen naast het grafische werk. En ik vindt het mooi dat ik beide disciplines kan combineren.’
How broad is the spectrum in which you work as a designer? Art Director Joep Pohlen: ‘That largely depends on your background. Design remains design, even if it becomes three-dimensional. What changes is the choice of materials, the expertise and your ability to imagine what something with a spatial form will look like. A book is also a three-dimensional form, but a stand, an exhibition or a piece of furniture is still quite different. For me, it started when I went to work for my uncle in his furniture factory as a holiday job, followed by a carpentry course. After that I had a job advising woodworking companies which tools to use in the production of furniture, doors and windows until I decided to study again as a graphic designer at the Art Academy in Maastricht (NL). During my studies, I also designed and made furniture as a part time activity to finance my study. From that expertise, I continued to design three-dimensional projects alongside my graphic work at Polka Design. And I like the fact that I can combine both disciplines.’

Workflow
It is a pleasure to design a booth in such a way that it acts as a magnet to the fair visitor. Often, the details are the most important, because it is not only attracting a visitor to the booth but also keeping him or her there. We design a booth on the basis of the client’s requirements and make a working drawing with which the stand builder can make an estimate. For the stand above, it was important to emphasise that Leitz had been active in Belgium for 50 years. This was therefore celebrated in a grand manner, while the stand also offered plenty to do with displays, screens, catering and a meeting room for clients who needed a little more attention. A compact booth with lots of possibilities.

‘We use both our experience in designing exhibition booths and graphic design for this client. In addition to designing an anniversary logo, we also designed invitations, an advertising campaign and promotional gifts for the 50th anniversary. For Belgium, of course, everything was in both Dutch and French. The exhibition booth in Belgium was quite compact, but the Leitz Nederland booth at HoutPro+ in the Brabanthallen in ’s Hertogenbosch (NL) was much larger, with the displays later given a second use in the showroom of the new head office in Elst (NL). The stand provided space for a 54-seat lounge, a catering area, a VIP area, video projection and displays that highlighted each specialist area separately.’

‘For this client, we have been designing fair booths for both the Dutch and the Belgian subsidiaries since 2008. For the specific wood fairs as well as for the construction fairs and the metal fairs such as the Technishow. But also for smaller presentations and open house events we design presentation walls, banners, digital presentations and printed matter.’

‘Our function as a design agency is to think up new angles for every assignment. For example, in addition to the above presentation wall, we also designed the presentations in the showroom in the factory and digital presentations for the waiting area at the entrance desk. But also the printing on the tarpaulins of the large trailers that travel through the Netherlands. For the Laurentius Hospital in Roermond, we designed the logo and everything that goes with it. From flags to admission badges and from an anniversary logo and book to the all-over printing on a public passenger bus. But also the signage around the hospital and the placement of the signs. Here again, many disciplines come together in which, in addition to the three-dimensional aspect (how the signs are placed in their surroundings and how they are perceived), the printing also plays a major role in guiding the flow of visitors in the right direction. And with every assignment, we also think along about the texts that will be used, in Dutch as well as in English and German. And if necessary, we even make a proposal for the text.’

‘Of course, this page only gives a small impression of the work we do in the 3D field. Sometimes they are transitional, such as packaging designs that may not be as large as an exhibition booth but also need to be viewed from all sides. An example is the box with a direct marketing mailing for Leitz where you are sent a block of wood with surprising contents. But also the design of a monument cast in bronze that is combined with Corten steel plates or a memorial of Plexiglas embedded in a wooden column with stainless steel plates and lasered text. As a designer, you have to put yourself in the shoes of the user every time. Whether it's a reader or a trade fair visitor ...’
